During 11 – 12 June 2016, the Royal Thai Embassy arranged a mobile consular service unit for Thai workers who work in the construction project of the Medupi Power Station in Lephalale, South Africa. On this occasion, Ambassador Pornchai Danvivathana and staff of the Royal Thai Embassy met with representatives of Murray and Roberts Company, the contractor of the construction and recruiter of the Thai workforce for the project, visited the Thai workers’ campsites and met with Thai workers to see how they live and their welfare as well as to listen to their enquiries and to give them some advices. Also, the Ambassador and party visited the Medupi Power Station, the fourth largest coal-fired power plant in the world. At the same time, the Ambassador and party processed the applications for Thai passports to workers.     

           Currently, there are approximately 700 Thai workers working in the construction, making the largest number of expatriate workers who work in this project. Thai workers are known for their highly advanced skills, especially in welding technique. In addition, Thailand also supplies some of the materials used in the project, particularly the 3 super boilers.
