On 9 May 2017, the Republic of Korea held a presidential election, and on 10 May 2017, Mr. Moon Jae-in was announced the next President of the Republic of Korea.

On behalf of the Royal Thai Government and the people of the Kingdom of Thailand, H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha (Ret.), Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, has extended his warmest congratulations to Mr. Moon Jae-in on his election as the President of the Republic of Korea, and expressed his readiness to work closely with the President-elect to further strengthen bilateral ties as both sides commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations in 2018 as follows:

Excellency,

I have the honour to extend to Your Excellency, on behalf of the Government and the people of the Kingdom of Thailand, my warmest congratulations on being elected as the President of the Republic of Korea.

The Kingdom of Thailand and the Republic of Korea have long enjoyed cordial relations. Our soldiers fought side by side during the Korean War and we have built strong economic and cultural ties ever since. I am confident that under your leadership, we will be able to further advance these ties for the mutual benefit of our countries and peoples.

As next year will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic relations, I very much look forward to meeting and working closely with Your Excellency to commemorate such an occasion, thus taking our relationship to a higher plane.

Accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.

General Prayut Chan-o-cha (Ret.)
Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand
