On 21 May 2025, Mr. Piyapak Sricharoen, Director-General of the Department of East Asian Affairs, and Mr. Wei Ran, Director-General of the Foreign Affairs Office of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, co-chaired the Fifth Thailand - Guangxi Working Group Meeting in Nanning, with the attendance of officials from the line agencies of both sides.

The two sides discussed ways and means to strengthen cooperation on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of Thailand - China Diplomatic Relations, particularly between Thailand and Guangxi. Key areas of discussion included economic cooperation, science, technology and innovation (STI), and people-to-people exchange.

On Economic Cooperation:

Both sides reiterated their commitment to promoting Thailand - Guangxi trade and investment, recognising the strong growth potential of their business sectors. The Meeting agreed to facilitate trade, transportation, and logistics, particularly for agricultural products, and to enhance seamless connectivity via land, water, and air routes. They also agreed to leverage trade exhibitions hosted by one another. Thailand also expressed its support for the 22nd China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) to be held in Nanning from 17 - 21 September 2025.

On Science, Technology and Innovation (STI):

Both sides explored opportunities to expand cooperation in STI, digital economy, green economy, and emerging industries such as artificial intelligence (AI).

On People-to-People Exchange:

Both sides discussed enhancing cooperation in education and tourism, particularly cultural and community-based tourism, as well as sister city relations. Both sides acknowledged that people-to-people ties form the foundation of Thailand - China relations.

The Thailand - Guangxi Working Group was established in 2015, with meetings alternately hosted by Thailand and Guangxi. Thailand is scheduled to host the 6th Meeting in 2027.
