On 29 November 2021, the Member States of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) during its 59th Annual Session in Hong Kong, People’s Republic of China, elected Dr. Kamalinne Pinitpuvadol to serve as the new Secretary-General of AALCO for the term 2022-2025, succeeding Prof. Dr. Kennedy Gastorn from Tanzania. Dr. Kamalinne Pinitpuvadol will be the first Thai national to serve in this position.

Thailand has been an AALCO Member State since 1962. Currently, AALCO has 47 Member States from Africa and Asia, including Japan, China, the Republic of Korea, India, and ASEAN countries which are Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand. The Annual Session of AALCO serves as a forum for its Member States to discuss and express their positions on the issues of their interests involving the development of international law, particularly in the framework of the International Law Commission and the Sixth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly. Thailand has long benefited from the exchange of views with other Member States in AALCO on the development of international law, including issues deemed to be important to the regions. AALCO also provides a forum for networking among international lawyers from Asia, Africa and international organizations.

Thailand wishes Dr. Kamalinne Pinitpuvadol all the success as AALCO enters a new era with new challenges ushered in by the COVID-19 pandemic. As the only inter-regional organization for promoting cooperation on international law between Asia and Africa, AALCO has a unique role in the field of international law. Thailand will continue its unwavering support to AALCO and the new Secretary-General.
