H.E. Mrs. Suphanvasa Chotikajan Tang, Ambassador of Thailand to Denmark, together with a team from the Royal Thai Embassy, participated in a study visit to Denmark by faculty members and PhD students from the Technology Management and Innopreneurship Program (CUTIP) of Chulalongkorn University in Aarhus between 23 – 25 March 2026 and in Copenhagen and the surrounding areas on 27 March 2026. Thailand and Nordic Countries Innovation Unit (TNIU), a unit under the Embassy to promote innovation and knowledge exchange, as well as business to business connections between Thailand and Denmark, facilitated the arrangements to meet with relevant Danish government agencies and companies on innovations.
The Ambassador and the team from the Embassy together with the CUTIP delegation learned about the vision of Aarhus, the 2nd largest city in Denmark, aiming to become the hub of innovation of the country with its strong innovation ecosystem, and successful implementation of the Public - Private Partnership (PPP) model which in the end translated to concrete benefits for the city. These visits included
(1) ITK (Innovation, Teknologi og Kreativitet) - a department of Aarhus Municipality with the responsibilities to develop and support the creation of innovation using open-source technologies to improve public services. The key drivers of the Department include the Center for Innovation in Aarhus (CFIA) which works in partnership with other municipalities, academia, and private citizens to develop innovative ideas, and Aarhus City Lab, a hub for testing and displaying “smart city solutions” jointly developed by public and private sectors. The LAB conducted several interesting tests including the use of autonomous robots in public spaces to provide services to the public (i.e. delivery, and cleaning). ITK is located at DOKK1, a public space near the dock of Aarhus, which houses multiple municipality agencies, a public library, and shared spaces for easy and inclusive access. DOKK1 has become a landmark that transformed a defunct industrial harbor into a thriving cultural center.
(2) INCUBA – a science park and innovation hub in Aarhus, owned by Aarhus University Research Foundation (AUFF). It has a crucial role in incubating and promoting startups and spinoffs which are based on scientific research and technological advancement that are made. INCUBA services are comprised of office space for rent, business promotion packages, business matching with potential investors, and providing a space for knowledge exchanges between companies residing at INCUBA’s shared offices. On the occasion of the visit, the delegation learned about the work of successful companies supported by INCUBA, namely Mindway AI (providing AI system to track irregular gambling behaviors for online gambling sites), ARAS (digitalization of supply chain and production process for manufacturing companies) and SCALGO (providing a subscription-based program to measure rainfall and waterflow for better water management)
(3) The Kitchen – a hub and incubator for innovations and startup businesses, under Aarhus University. It provides necessary assistance for students and researchers to develop their research projects into viable startups by offering office space and resources needed as well as guidance from the faculty, experts, and successful entrepreneurs. The delegation received a briefing by a PhD student on her research project “LAB99”, a part of “the Junior Innovator Project”, which aimed to support non – “unicorn” startups (the other 99%) in doing business successfully. The core strength of The Kitchen is its ability to create an effective incubating environment for startups based on academic work by utilizing existing resources of the University. This may serve as a good model for universities in Thailand to consider adopting.
During their study visit to Copenhagen and the surrounding areas, the delegations toured ARGO, a waste-to-electricity power plant situated in Roskilde, 40 Km from Copenhagen, and learned about the highly effective technology utilized to burn waste with the least environmental impact, and the plan to improve the ability of the plant to capture carbon. This plant produces electricity for 65,000 households and heat through the district heating system for 45,000 households, demonstrating the success of sustainable energy production through technological innovation. The delegation then visited UN City, a UN regional office in Copenhagen, and met with representatives of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). They learned about the work of UNEP Copenhagen Climate Center (UNEP CCC) in transferring technologies to developing countries by first initiating a Technology Needs Assessment (TNA). UNEP is currently working closely with the Office of National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council (NXPO) of Thailand on its TNA.
The aforementioned study visit provides an ample opportunity for the CUTIP delegation to experience how Denmark develops, incubates, promotes, and effectively utilizes innovation, as well as to exchange their experiences directly with both public and private sectors in the country on translating their academic research into viable solutions and successful businesses. The Embassy also benefits greatly by the visit which expands the network of close connections with Danish government agencies and companies for potential future cooperation.
In this occasion, the Ambassador hosted a dinner for the CUTIP delegation at the Ambassador residence on 27 March 2026 to provide an opportunity to further exchange views on how to advance technology and innovation in Thailand, and learn more about the various PhD thesis topics of each of the students, which included waste management, sanitation, and innovative commercial products The dinner was also attended by diplomats and staff of the Embassy.
