On 27 May 2025, Ms. Somrudee Poopornanake, Deputy Director-General of the Department of European Affairs, participated in the 7th Meeting of the Joint Working Group on Security Consultations between Thailand’s National Security Council (NSC) and the Security Council of the Russian Federation, held at the National Centre in Moscow, the Russian Federation.

The Thai delegation, led by Mr. Chatchai Bangchuad, Secretary-General of the NSC, exchanged views on political, security, and military developments in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as the situation in Ukraine with the Russian counterparts, led by Mr. Alexander Venediktov, Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation. The meeting also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation under ASEAN–Russia mechanisms and through bilateral agreements and MoUs between Thailand and Russia. Additionally, both sides shared their perspectives and best practices on counter-terrorism, extremism, transnational crime, narcotics suppression, and anti-money laundering.

The Joint Working Group on Security Consultations between the National Security Council of Thailand and the Security Council of the Russian Federation was first convened in 2005 and Thailand will host the next round of consultations.
