The Royal Thai Embassy led a delegation of Thai experts to Qatar during 7 – 15 September 2025 to expand cooperation and exchange knowledge on circular economy and design for sustainable development. Overall, the initiative featured the exhibition Thailand’s Innovative Upcycling for Everyday Life in collaboration with Qatar Museums, a visit and meeting with the executives of Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar), and discussions with representatives of entities under Qatar Museums. The Thai expert delegation from Kasetsart University comprise Assoc. Prof. Dr. Singh Intrachooto, Founder of Scrap Lab, Prof. Ornsuta Dabbhodyan, Professor of Architecture, Miss Ploynisa Sabuysuvarn, and Mr. Phokhai Wasinnitiwong, research and design assistants of the Faculty of Architecture.
From 8 – 14 September 2025, the Royal Thai Embassy, in collaboration with Qatar Museums, organized “Thailand’s Innovative Upcycling for Everyday Life” Exhibition at M7 Gallery in Doha. This exhibition highlighted Thailand’s human-centered approach to sustainability integrating modern technology, local wisdom, and environmental responsibility to promote inclusive, practical, and enduring development. Highlights included carpets woven from upcycled plastic in traditional patterns, footwear and household items made from agricultural by-products, and bags crafted from recycled automobile taillights and used medical equipment. These works reflected Thailand’s Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy concept and reaffirmed Thailand’s role as a leader in environmental innovation, while also creating new opportunities for collaborations between Thailand and Qatar. The week-long exhibition received more than 500 visitors.
On 10 September 2025, H.E. Mr. Sira Swangsilpa, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Thailand to the State of Qatar, led the delegation to visit Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar), where they were welcomed by Mr. Amir Debric, Dean of VCUarts Qatar, who guided them through the university’s facilities. Both sides discussed ways to promote academic collaboration between two institutions, especially in developing product design from waste materials, as well as extending Thailand’s expertise in combing art and design with commercialization.
On 11 September 2025, the delegation met with representatives of Qatar Museums’ affiliated institutions, including M7 Gallery, Liwan Design Studio and Labs, and Design Doha. Discussions focused on promoting the upcycled product design, as well as potential cooperation and Thailand participation in Qatar’s design-related initiatives. The delegation also visited Liwan Design Studio and Labs, which serves as an incubator for artists and designers in Qatar.
This initiative builds on Thailand’s participation in the Earthna Summit 2025 in March, reaffirming the Royal Thai Embassy’s commitment to advancing networks in innovation and academia between Thailand and Qatar, and to promoting human-centered development that integrates modern technology with local wisdom. Such efforts will further strengthen bilateral relations across political, economic, and people-to-people dimensions.
