On 18 August 2025, Ms. Sirilak Niyom, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, met with the bipartisan U.S. Congressional Staff Delegation, comprising Chiefs of Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff, Committee Staff Director, Legislative Director, Policy Advisors, and staff members of various U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate offices, during the delegation’s visit to Thailand from 15 - 24 August 2025 at the invitation of the Royal Thai Embassy, Washington D.C.
Both sides discussed strengthening Thailand - U.S. relations and cooperation in various areas, including security and defense, law enforcement, trade and investment, as well as reciprocal tariff negotiations with the U.S. including the impact on Thailand. They also exchanged views on regional developments and other issues of mutual interest. The Deputy Permanent Secretary reiterated the importance of the longstanding alliance and multifaceted strategic partnership between Thailand and the U.S., which has benefited both countries and people, and the promotion of peace, security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. Thailand is committed to enhancing cooperation with the U.S. in this regard.
The Deputy Permanent Secretary shared with the delegation updates on the Thailand - Cambodia border situation, whereby Thailand reaffirmed full commitment to the ceasefire and condemned the indiscriminate attacks by Cambodia that have resulted in losses and damages to civilians. Thailand also condemned the use of anti-personnel landmines by Cambodia that caused permanent disabilities and injuries to Thai soldiers while on patrol within the Thai territory. The said use of landmines constitute a violation of Thai sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as international humanitarian law and the Ottawa Convention. Thailand called on the U.S., as a donor country to landmine clearance efforts in Cambodia, to review U.S. assistance and urge Cambodia to cooperate with Thailand on demining along the Thailand - Cambodia border.
