On 28 October 2025, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs, represented H.E. Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister, in attending the 5th ASEAN - Australia Summit on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The meeting discussed ways to advance cooperation under the ASEAN - Australia CSP, particularly the follow-up outcomes of the ASEAN - Australia Special Summit held in March 2024 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN - Australia Dialogue Relations, and the 4th ASEAN - Australia Summit convened in October 2024, with a view to achieving more concrete results. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in security, trade and investment, as well as in environmental protection, disaster management, and public health. Furthermore, the meeting also exchanged views on regional and international developments.

The Foreign Minister reaffirmed Thailand’s readiness to advance tangible cooperation between ASEAN and Australia, especially in view of the upcoming 5th anniversary of their CSP in 2026. He proposed promoting cooperation in three key areas: (1) security, with an emphasis on the strengthening of multilateral cooperation to promote regional peace and stability, particularly in maritime and cyber security, as well as addressing transnational crime; (2) economy, where Thailand seeks to enhance trade and investment with Australia through existing cooperation frameworks, such as the AANZFTA and RCEP, with the Foreign Minister also proposing the convening of an ASEAN-wide CEO Forum and the expansion of Australia’s Landing Pad innovation offices across the region, as well as the strengthening of cooperation in the Mekong subregion; and (3) people-to-people cooperation, fostering closer collaboration in public health through existing mechanisms, such as the ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases (ACPHEED) and the ASEAN Centre for Active Ageing and Innovation (ACAI).

In addition, Thailand reaffirmed its support for ASEAN’s implementation of the Five-Point Consensus and expressed appreciation to Australia for its support of ASEAN-led humanitarian initiatives. The meeting also adopted the ASEAN - Australia Joint Leaders’ Statement on Conflict Prevention and Crisis Management under the ASEAN-led Regional Architecture.
