Darjeeling, 2 April 2025 – In a beautiful celebration of Thai culture, unity and empowerment, the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Kolkata, in collaboration with Wat Thairachaduta 609, hosted a special “Songkran Festival”, complemented by enriching activities for Thai students studying at 4 prominent Darjeeling boarding schools: (1) Himali Boarding School, (2) St. Paul’s School, (3) St. Joseph’s North Point, and (4) Mount Hermon, along with their teachers, and guardians, creating a warm and vibrant gathering of nearly 100 attendees. The Festival, marking the Thai New Year, offered the Thai students—who are far from their families—to reconnect with their cultural heritage, while feeling the embrace of a supportive community during their time abroad.
At the heart of the celebration was a deeply meaningful ceremony led by Consul-General Siriporn Tantipanyathep. In a moment of heartfelt reverence, the students united in paying tribute to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on Her Birthday Anniversary – a profound act of loyalty and gratitude. The ceremony also featured a Buddhist chanting ritual, inviting all present to partake in moments of reflection and spiritual reverence.
The Consul-General, along with Phrakrupalad Bodhivongworrarat, Chief Abbot of Wat Thairachaduta, shared inspiring and uplifting messages with the students. They spoke passionately about the importance of preserving Thailand’s rich cultural heritage, fostering unity, and supporting one another – values that are especially meaningful for students living away from home. Their messages reminded the students of the strength and pride that comes from being part of the Thai community, no matter where life’s journey takes them. They encouraged the young people to carry forward the virtues of respect, kindness, and resilience throughout their lives, wherever they may be.
Following the ceremony, a delicious and comforting Thai lunch was served, offering the students a nourishing taste of home in the heart of Darjeeling. Each school also received thoughtful care packages of Thai instant noodles—a simple yet heartfelt gesture to ease the students’ daily lives and remind them that, though miles away from home, they are always surrounded by love and care from their community.
This remarkable event beautifully underscored the strength of community and the vital role played by the Royal Thai Consulate-General and Wat Thairachaduta in supporting Thai students abroad. The Songkran Festival in Darjeeling was more than just a celebration—it was a powerful reminder of the joy that comes from unity, the pride of heritage, and the enduring bonds that unite people across distances.
Through this heartfelt gathering, the Royal Thai Consulate-General reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Thai students and nurturing a deep sense of pride in their cultural identity. Even in the distant hills of Darjeeling, the spirit of Thailand continues to thrive, filling the hearts of students with a profound sense of belonging and connection.
