On 25 February 2022, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of Thailand, held a discussion with Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Prime Minister of Malaysia, at the Government House, during the latter’s official visit to Thailand on 24 – 26 February 2022. Prime Minister of Malaysia was accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of International Trade and Industry and Deputy Minister of Federal Territories of Malaysia.

On this occasion, both Prime Ministers agreed to enhance the strategic partnership between Thailand and Malaysia and to work closely to achieve post-COVID-19 recovery for the benefits of people in both countries. Key issues discussed between the two Prime Ministers included the affirmation to reopen borders for fully vaccinated travellers with no quarantine as soon as possible, which would help revive the economy and boost tourism. Both sides also agreed to finalise the mutual recognition of their digital vaccine certificates, which would facilitate the travelling procedures between Thailand and Malaysia.

Moreover, both sides agreed to expedite connectivity projects in the border areas, including the construction of the road alignment linking CIQ Sadao and CIQ Bukit Kayu Hitam, and the construction of new bridges across the Golok River. In addition, both leaders discussed developments on the Southern Border Provinces of Thailand, where PM Prayut elaborated Thailand’s policy on the said issue, and expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s contribution. Among other matters, the two Prime Ministers agreed to revitalize existing bilateral mechanisms and encouraged more visits and exchanges at all levels to help drive their cooperation efforts into tangible results.
