Summary of Press Briefing on the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

By the Director-General of the Department of Information and MFA Spokesperson

on 25 September 2025

  • A number of Thai delegates comprising senior executives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Public Health have already arrived in New York to attend the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly from 23–29 September 2025.
  • For the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the delegation comprises the Directors-General and Deputy Directors-General of the relevant departments, who have begun attending meetings since the 23rd of September. They have also been engaging in discussions with representatives from other countries to drive international cooperation, whether on combating transnational crime, addressing the global economy through new international cooperation mechanisms and tools, or addressing sustainable development and human security challenges.
  • With regard to the Head of the Thai Delegation, Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkaew, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will arrive in New York on 25 September 2025.
  • As the Minister explained to the media yesterday on his first day in office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand’s objective in attending the UNGA80 this year is two-fold:

First, Thailand will re-invigorate its engagement as a responsible member of the international community in support of multilateralism, by demonstrating its vision and stances on a number of key issues, based firmly in international law and principles. Whether far or near, the interconnectness of the international community requires Thailand to share its views on issues such as Ukraine and the Middle East to more immediate issues impacting our neighborhood and Thailand directly such as Myanmar and the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border. Thailand’s vision and stance will be reflected in the statement delivered by the Head of the Thai Delegation to the United Nations General Assembly on 27 September.

Second, the Minister has scheduled meetings with various important figures, including the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Japanese Foreign Minister (in his capacity as Chair of the Ottawa Convention, as Thailand is currently advocating for humanitarian demining), the Russian Foreign Minister (in his capacity as Chair of the UNSC for the month of October 2025), the Malaysian Foreign Minister, in his capacity as current Chair of ASEAN, and others, including the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar and the High Commissioner for Human Rights. These meetings will take place on 26-27 September 2025.

  • Equally important, the Foreign Minister will be using this visit to the United States to highlight investment opportunities and expand trade cooperation with the United States, by touching base with the US-ASEAN Business Council and the US Chamber of Commerce in an event hosted by the latter on 26 September 2025.
