On 18 April 2025, the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Penang, in collaboration with the Office of Tourism Authority of Thailand in Kuala Lumpur, organised a Songkran Festival in Penang at Hin Bus Depot in George Town, Penang. In this event, H.E. Mr. Psusist Wongsurawat, Consul-General of Thailand in Penang, presided over the ceremony with Opening Speech, followed by the speech of YB Teh Lai Heng, Member of the Penang State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Komtar, as Guest of Honour. The festival was also attended by dignitaries, namely (1) Ms. Ding Qiao, Vice Consul - General, Chinese Consulate - General in Penang, (2) Dato Yeoh Soon Hin, Chairman of the Penang Port Commission, Deputy Chairman of Tourism Malaysia and Honorary Consul of Mexico in Penang, (3) Datin Joelyn Teoh Lay Fung, Honorary Consul of Chile in Penang, (4) Dato Seri Ar. Jong East Full, Honorary Consul of Finland in Penang as well as Friends of Thailand, Thai communities, Penangites, Thai students in Penang and foreign tourists for more than 4,000 visitors.
During the opening ceremony, Consul-General of Thailand requested for a minute of silence for 93 seconds to pay tribute to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, followed by an Opening Speech highlighting the royal works of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother to revive Thai Silk to the world stage and also invited participants to try Thai traditional costumes through AI Photo. Consul-General of Thailand also stated about the history of the Songkran or Thai New Year, when Thai people gather with their families and pay respect to the elders. Apart from that, it is the period when Thai people pour water on the Buddha statue for blessings and water splashing to each other signifies the washing away of bad luck and misfortune. Furthermore, in 2023, UNESCO officially recognised Songkran in Thailand as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Thereafter, YB Teh Lai Heng delivered an opening speech emphasising the unique identity of Penang as a multicultural society, which values the respect of cultural diversity, and the long-standing relationships between Thailand and Penang based on shared culture.
In the event, there were cultural performances by Songkhla Rajabhat University, Muay Thai demonstration by Nicha Muay Thai Gym, Thai music by Plug The Voice Thailand (Arom Dee Band), Thai food and beverage stalls, demonstration of Thai cuisine and craft, namely fruits/vegetables carving, Luk Chup or miniature, fruit-shaped Thai desserts made from sweetened, coconut-infused mung bean paste, Thai umbrella painting, Tung making, Thai massage by Thai Odessey, Tourism Authority of Thailand booth, and booths from Thai entrepreneurs including Singha Beer, MK Restaurant Group, Laem Charoen restaurant, and Laguna Grand Hotel & Spa Songkhla, the activities of which received lots of attentions from the participants. Additionally, the Royal Thai Consulate-General also set up an area for water-splashing activity and arrange games about Songkran tradition and Thailand on stage.
