On 23 March 2023, H.E. Ms. Vimolbajra Ruksakiati, Ambassador of Thailand to Norway, paid a study visit to Svolvær, Lofoten, and met with representatives from the Marine Recycling Cluster (MRC) and their member companies, which have technologies and innovation for marine debris management, namely SALT Lofoten AS, LoVeMar AS and Tiepoint AS. They have expressed an interest to cooperate with Thailand on marine debris management. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Monsak Jangariyawong, Minister Counsellor, and Ms. Kanoknapat Suksong, Researcher and coordinator of Thailand and Nordic Countries Innovation Unit (TNIU).

After the briefing, Mr. Terje Olav Hansen, Project Leader, LoVeMar A/S, invited Ambassador Vimolbajra Ruksakiati and her delegation to observe the work of LoVeMar on Bømyrværing boat, when cleaning up marine debris in the Vestfjorden. The boat is about 30 feet long and has a special feature on the front part, which can be opened to collect marine litters and debris from both on the shore and floating on the sea. LoVeMar AS is based in Fiskebøl and the company’s services include giving advice and providing cleaning equipment to clean the coastal area, for water surface, and in the river. The Company also works on research and development of technology for marine debris sweeping and floating conveyor lines as well as high efficiency services and products for managing marine plastic waste. LoVeMar AS is a member of the Marine Recycling Cluster (MRC).

Norway places priority on the management of marine debris and the Norwegian government is the first government in the world to establish a specialized center, working on marine debris, namely the Norwegian Centre Against Marine Litter (MARFO), located in Lofoten.

This study visit was a part of activities of the Thailand and Nordic Countries Innovation Unit (TNIU) at the Thai Embassy in Oslo which is a social platform to promote cooperation between Thailand and Nordic countries on innovation and sustainable development. As Marine debris management is one of Norway's key expertise, in 2019 Norway initiated ASEAN-Norwegian cooperation project on local capacity building for reducing plastic pollution in the ASEAN. Thailand places high importance on tackling marine debris as the country is surrounded by oceans and rivers, similar to Norway. This study visit would further benefit the cooperation on policy linkage between Norway’s Green Transition policy and Thailand’s Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy, especially for environment preservation and sustainable development.
