On 20 October 2023, H.E. Ms. Vimolbajra Ruksakiati, Ambassador of Thailand to Norway, had a meeting with the Norwegian Health Authority of the Olso Municipality led by Ms. Heidi Olsen, Adviser on Migration and Minority Health, Ms. Monica Gaupset, Health Nurse Infection Control, Ms. Gina Vreim Sundsbø, Professional Consultant for Environmental Healthcare, and Mr. Ståle Grøthe, Professional Consultant for Environmental Healthcare. Ms. Potchamas Saengthien, Counsellor, Ms. Bheraya Homkosol, Counsellor, Ms. Shantana Berg, President of the Thai Women’s Association in Norway, and members of the working group under “The Project Promoting Potential Development of Thai Massage in Norway”, including the Thai Massage and Spa Association in Norway were also in attendance.
On this occasion, Ambassador Vimolbajra presented “The Project Promoting Potential Development of Thai Massage in Norway”, initiated by the Thai Women’s Association in Norway and supported by the Royal Thai Embassy in Oslo. Ambassador Vimolbajra stressed that the ultimate goal of this Project is empowerment of Thai community in Norway, especially Thai women. This meeting is the follow-up of the previous meetings between the Thai Embassy and various Norwegian authorities, particularly Ambassador Vimolbajra’s meeting with Ms. Marianne Borgen, Acting Mayor of Oslo, in February 2023.
Ms. Heidi Olsen expressed her support to the “The Project Promoting Potential Development of Thai Massage in Norway” and agreed with Ambassador Vimolbajra that this project is women empowerment project and commended that efforts being made in this project are like “we are helping our sisters.” The Norwegian Health Authority of the Oslo Municipality informed that they can be of guidance for these efforts. Ms. Heidi Olsen also kindly suggested that the Thai side may categorize the project into areas of scope, for example in areas of health, empowerment, and language to facilitate the consideration from the Norwegian authorities concerned on funding for this project. Ambassador Vimolbajra offered to host the next meeting with the Norwegian Health Authority of the Oslo Municipality at the Thai Embassy to continue this substantive and fruitful discussion.
The Royal Thai Embassy would like to express our appreciation to the Norwegian Health Authority of the Oslo Municipality for their valuable suggestion and inputs as well as the Thai Women’s Association in Norway, the working group under the Project, and the participating Thai massage parlors for their hard work and dedication to this Project in order to elevate the standard of Thai massage in Norway. As said, to address Thai massage in Norway, we need cooperation and engagement from the Norwegian side to address this issue effectively.
