On 11 - 13 February 2026, Mrs. Urasa Mongkolnavin, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs, led a Thai business delegation, particularly in the food and food processing sectors, including representatives from the Federation of Thai Industries, to Egypt to participate in the Thailand - Egypt Business Forum and business matching activities. The events were organized by the Royal Thai Embassy in Cairo in collaboration with the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) and the Egyptian Businessmen’s Association (EBA).
The delegation received briefings on investment opportunities and projects by Thai companies operating in Egypt, including Hi-Tech Apparel, which has established a garment manufacturing facility there. They held discussions with executives and visited supermarkets, hotels, and food manufacturers in Egypt to assess market potential and supply chains. They also participated in the Thai Food Bazaar 2026 in Cairo to gain deeper insights into Egypt’s economic landscape and consumer market potential. In addition, the Director-General led executives from Thailand’s Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank) to meet with senior officials of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), headquartered in Cairo, to expand financial and banking cooperation between Thailand and African countries. The objective was to help address financial transaction challenges and facilitate Thai private sector’s investment expansion in Egypt and across Africa.
The visit generated tangible outcomes, including immediate trade and investment matchmaking between Thai companies and Egyptian counterparts, in line with the Government’s “Quick Big Win” approach. This initiative also supports the Royal Thai Government’s Economic Diplomacy policy and advances the Thailand - Africa Initiative (TAI), which aims to enhance Thailand’s engagement with Africa, particularly in economic and investment dimensions. With a population of approximately 120 million, Egypt represents a large market and is Thailand’s number one trading partner in North Africa. In 2025, total bilateral trade between Thailand and Egypt reached USD 974.86 million.
