On 7 July 2025, Mr. Phuchphop Mongkolnavin, Deputy Director-General, International Organizations Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, delivered a statement at the 47th Session of the World Heritage Committee.
He emphasized Thailand’s commitment to the principles enshrined in the World Heritage Convention and willingness to work constructively with the World Heritage Centre, the Advisory Bodies, States Parties to the Convention, and all partners to find a balanced approach between conservation and development. He also underscored Thailand’s determination to ensure the sustainable preservation and development of the existing ones by actively engaging with the World Heritage Centre. Recently, Thailand, in collaboration with UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok and Southeast Asian Regional Centre for Archaeology and Fine Arts, has invited Advisory Bodies to visit its properties and organized a workshop on Heritage Impact Assessments to raise awareness and understanding about the impact assessment procedures on World Heritage Sites.
The Session of the World Heritage Committee, established under the 1972 World Heritage Convention, is one of the most important meetings within the UNESCO framework. Its core responsibilities include approving new inscriptions on the World Heritage List, placing sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger or removing sites that have deteriorated significantly, as well as approving international assistance by States Parties. At this 47th Session, three Thai World Heritage sites are on the state of conservation agenda, consisting of (1) The Ancient Town of Si Thep and its Associated Dvaravati Monuments; (2) Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex; and (3) Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex.
Currently, Thailand has eight cultural and natural properties inscribed on the World Heritage List, namely (1) The Ancient City of Si Thep and its Associated Dvaravati Monuments; (2) Phu Phrabat, a testimony to the Sema stone tradition of the Dvaravati period; (3) Ban Chiang Archaeological Site; (4) Historic City of Ayutthaya; (5) Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns; (6) Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex; (7) Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex; and (8) Thung Yai-Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuaries. Additionally, Thailand has seven sites on the Tentative List, namely (1) Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan, Nakhon Si Thammarat; (2) Monuments, Sites and Cultural Landscape of Chiang Mai, Capital of Lanna; (3) Phra That Phanom, its related historic buildings and associated landscape; (4) Ensemble of Phanom Rung, Muang Tam and Plai Bat Sanctuaries; (5) The Andaman Sea Nature Reserves of Thailand; (6) Songkhla and its Associated Lagoon Settlements; and (7) Phra Prang of Wat Arun Ratchawararam: The Masterpiece of Krung Rattanakosin.
