On 9 September 2024, Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs hosted the side event titled “The Appeal of Private International Law through the Lens of the Apostille Convention” during the 62nd Annual Session of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) in Bangkok. The session included key speakers such as Dr. Christophe Bernasconi, Secretary-General of the HCCH and Ms. Chaowanee Tangwongprasert, Director of the Legalization Division, Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand. Ms. Ornyajai Phoolthanang, Head of International Cooperation, Ministry of Justice, moderated the session.
 
The event aimed to enhance understanding of the work of the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH) and the benefits of private international law, especially the Apostille Convention. They explained HCCH’s work and how private international law helps people, with a focus on the Apostille Convention’s role in simplifying the legalization of public documents for international use. They also shared insights on the latest developments of the Apostille Convention and Thailand’s preparations to become a Party to such Convention.
 
The side event provided participants with valuable insights into the cross-border document legalization process and served as a platform for policymakers and legal experts from AALCO member states to exchange perspectives and experiences on the practical benefits of joining the Apostille Convention. It reaffirmed the commitment to enhancing international legal processes, making them more efficient and accessible.
