On 24 September 2026, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, delivered the opening remarks at the side event entitled "Delivering the Sendai Framework: An ASEAN Approach to Inclusive Disaster and Climate Resilience". The event was co-organized by Thailand, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Japan, and the Philippines during the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York.

On this occasion, the Deputy Prime Minister pointed out the risks and impacts of increasingly severe and unpredictable climate-related disasters, noting that ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific region remain particularly vulnerable and heavily affected. To achieve disaster resilience, he underscored the importance of comprehensive disaster management encompassing risk reduction, rapid response, and timely recovery and relief that prioritize vulnerable groups. Effective data management and proactive communication to the public are significant to prevent misinformation, complicating response efforts. The Foreign Minister highlighted "One ASEAN, One Response" concept as a key mechanism for collaborative disaster management among ASEAN nations.

The opening session also featured remarks by the Foreign Ministers of the Philippines and Australia, as well as high-level representatives from India, Japan, and UN-Habitat, followed by panel discussions involving experts from UNDRR, UN Women, and disaster management specialists from Thailand and Columbia University. The event aimed to foster cooperation on disaster management that addresses the needs of vulnerable groups, in alignment with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015–2030), the 2030 Agenda for UN Sustainable Development, as well as the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, while highlighting Thailand’s role as the ASEAN Coordinator for Sustainable Development Cooperation.
