On 15 July 2026, H.E. Mr. Vijavat Isarabhakdi, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, met with Dr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), on the occasion of the Executive Secretary’s official visit to Thailand and the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).

Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening cooperation on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and to upholding the global norm against nuclear weapons testing in all its forms amid the current geopolitical landscape. The Executive Secretary commended Thailand’s role as the host country for two stations under the International Monitoring System (IMS) of the CTBT framework, namely (1) the Primary Seismic Monitoring Station 41 (PS41) in Chiang Mai Province, and (2) the Radionuclide Monitoring Station (RN65) in Nakhon Pathom Province. Thailand has been utilizing data from this system for seismic monitoring, earthquake tracking, and tsunami early warning systems to enhance public safety. Thai experts also have consistently benefited from CTBTO’s training and capacity-building programmes, thereby enhancing their academic and technical capabilities.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the CTBT, Thailand expressed its readiness to co-host the CTBTO Regional Workshop for South-East Asia and the Pacific in Thailand in 2027, with a view to promoting regional cooperation and security.

The CTBT was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 September 1996, with the primary objective of banning all nuclear weapons test explosions and any other nuclear explosions in any environment worldwide. Thailand ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) on 25 September 2018.
