On 12 April 2013, United States Secretary of State John Kerry issued a press statement conveying, on behalf of the President and people of the United States, best wishes to the people of Thailand on the occasion of the Songkran holidays, the traditional Thai New Year.

The statement noted that “At this time of renewal, we reflect on the 180-year-old partnership between the United States and Thailand. Together, we have worked on important issues over the last year, building our economic ties, enhancing the safety and security of the region, and cooperating on public health and transnational issues. We look forward to deepening the partnership between our countries for the benefit of our peoples and the region in the year to come.  As the Thai people celebrate this holiday, let me reaffirm that the United States is a dedicated ally and friend. I offer my heartfelt wishes for a peaceful and prosperous new year.”
