On 2 March 2016, Mr. Luc Stevens, United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator for Thailand and UN Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative, Mr. Laurent Meillan, Acting Regional Representative (Southeast Asia) of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and Mr. Michael L. Bak, Advisor to the UN Resident Coordinator, met with H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs to discuss on cooperation between Thailand and the UN.
The Foreign Minister highlighted Thailand’s long-standing role over the UN and the past 70 years in supporting the work of the UN. The two sides exchanged ideas on practical ways to further promote cooperation. Thailand reaffirmed its leading role to support the UN, especially as the current Chair of G77, and will continue to push forward the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Thailand is of the view that His Majesty the King’s Sufficiency Economy Philosophy can be applied in order to achieve the SDGs.
The Foreign Minister also gave an update on Thailand’s recent political developments, notably the implementation of the Roadmap and the Reform process, which will lay a strong foundation for the country to move forward towards stability and sustainable development. The Foreign Minister also stressed Thailand’s determination and efforts to fully respect and promote human rights, including the rights of migrants and their children in Thailand. The UN Resident Coordinator acknowledged the political developments in Thailand and appreciated the efforts of the Prime Minister and the Government in tackling challenges of the nation.
