On 7 March 2016, H.E. Ms. Susan Gregson, Assistant Deputy Minister of Global Affairs Canada, paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Virasakdi Futrakul, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs. Both sides discussed Thailand-Canada bilateral relations, directions to enhance cooperation during Thailand's current political reform process, and global issues.
The Assistant Deputy Minister emphasized that Canada values Thailand considerably and expressed intention to further cooperate with Thailand in the areas of mutual interests, such as education, tourism, public health, science and technology, and public service commitment.
The Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs was pleased that Canada has attached importance to Thailand. He outlined Thailand’s political reform process towards sustainable democracy by building a strong and transparent foundation. He also intends to see the efforts from both countries in finding ways and means to strengthen bilateral relations through increasing cooperation in mutually beneficial areas like education, energy, trade, and investment.
Both sides also discussed global issues, such as, Canada's intention to join East Asia Summit, Climate Change, the process of Universal Periodic Review under the UN Human Rights Council, and South China Sea.
The visit of Ms. Susan Gregson is a good signal for Thailand-Canada relations, which would pave the way for further cooperation in all areas in the future.
