On 6 May 2025, Mrs. Sirilak Niyom, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, co-chaired the 3rd Thailand-Canada Bilateral Consultations with H.E. Mr. Weldon Epp, Assistant Deputy Minister, Indo-Pacific Branch, Global Affairs Canada, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand. The Consultations deliberated on forging a stronger partnership between the two countries and advancing cooperation to navigate global uncertainties and common challenges.

Both sides acknowledged with appreciation the increasingly positive dynamism of Thailand – Canada diplomatic relations, which will mark the 65th anniversary next year, and recognized the significant potential for further enhancing cooperation at bilateral, regional, and multilateral levels.

On political and security cooperation, both sides committed to promoting more high-level engagement and exchange of visits. The Thai side welcomed Canada’s enhanced partnership in both bilateral and regional security cooperation, including military training and law enforcement. Both sides reiterated the need to enhance cooperation to address the challenges of cyber security and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as well as transnational crime, particularly combating scam centers.

On economic partnership, both sides were pleased with the increasing bilateral trade, which has great potential to grow, and would work together for more trade and investment opportunities. In this regard, Thailand looks forward to welcoming the Team Canada Trade Mission (TCTM) later this month to further deepen the economic partnership between the two countries, particularly on agri-food and food processing, cleantech and sustainable infrastructure, ICT and life sciences. Both sides also discussed potential cooperation relating to digital economy and clean energy.

In addition, both sides deliberated on issues of shared principles and common priorities, including advancing an open and inclusive society, promoting human security and human rights, cooperation on climate change and clean energy, tourism, people-to-people connections, education, science, technology and innovation (STI).

On this occasion, both sides further discussed advancing regional cooperation, including through existing mechanisms, particularly the ASEAN and the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS). The two sides also reaffirmed their support for ongoing negotiations of the ASEAN-Canada FTA. They also exchanged views on key regional and global developments, including the situations in Myanmar and the South China Sea.
