Ms. Siriporn Tantipanyathep, Consul-General of Thailand in Kolkata, had the honor of attending the inauguration of the newly constructed “Jagannath Temple” in Digha, West Bengal, from 29 April - 1 May 2025. Her presence at this historic event reflected the growing cultural and spiritual connections between Thailand and India, underscoring a shared commitment to peace and unity.
The majestic Jagannath Temple in Digha, inspired by the revered Puri Temple, stands on a 24-acre site and is built from Rajasthan's red sandstone, welcoming all visitors, regardless of faith, offering a spiritual haven for all who seek peace. The inauguration began with a sacred ‘Maha Yajna’ on 29 April, led by Rajesh Daityapati from Puri, and was attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, 57 devotees, and 17 monks. On 30 April, Chief Minister Banerjee officially opened the temple, declaring “Jagannath and Joy Bangla.” The celebration, featuring vibrant Bengali performances and attended by dignitaries, emphasized India’s spirit of unity in diversity.
Consul-General Siriporn expressed her admiration for the temple’s vision, seeing it not only as a new center for spiritual tourism but also as a bridge that strengthens the deep, timeless bonds between Thailand and India. The temple’s message of peace and inclusivity is one that resonates deeply, marking a new chapter in the cultural dialogue between the two nations.
