Minister of Foreign Affairs attends the Loy Krathong event “Moonlit Journey: Our 340 Years of Sharing” for the 340th Anniversary of the first contact between Siam and France

On 5 November 2025, H.E. Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs, delivered opening remarks at the “Moonlit Journey: Our 340 Years of Sharing” Loy Krathong celebration to commemorate the 340th Anniversary of the first contact between Siam and France, held at the Residence of the Ambassador of France to Thailand. The event was organized by the Association of Former French Students under the Royal Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, in collaboration with the Embassy of France in Thailand. Net proceeds will be donated to the Chaipattana Foundation’s Disaster Recovery Fund.

Prior to the opening ceremony, participants observed 93 seconds of silence to pay their respects to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. The Foreign Minister commended the organizers for their dedication to preserving Thai traditions through the celebration of Loy Krathong. He also expressed his profound condolences on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother, noting her lifelong devotion to promoting and safeguarding Thai arts and culture, as well as her long-standing personal connection with France, where she once resided. The Foreign Minister emphazised the long-standing and close relationship between Thailand and France, which has flourished over the past 340 years. He reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to further strengthen and elevate their cooperation towards a “Thai - French Strategic Partnership.”

The event also featured a video presentation on the history of Siam - France relations, as well as a Loy Krathong ceremony showcasing “eco-friendly krathong” that won first prize in a design competition and can be reused. The krathong was co-developed by the Faculty of Engineering, Kasetsart University Sriracha Campus, and the ECAM LaSalle School of Engineering, France. The event brought together more than 400 participants from both countries.
