On 19 May 2025, Thailand and Indonesia announced the elevation of bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership and agreed to intensify bilateral cooperation across all areas of common interest both at the bilateral and regional levels. The announcement was made during the first official visit to Thailand of His Excellency Mr. Prabowo Subianto, President of the Republic of Indonesia, at the invitation of Her Excellency Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, which marks a historic chapter in the longstanding friendship and coincides with the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Indonesia this year.

On this occasion, His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Her Majesty Queen Suthida graciously granted the President of the Republic of Indonesia a Royal Audience at Amphorn Sathan Residential Hall, Dusit Palace.

The Thai and Indonesian leaders co-chaired the first Leaders’ Consultation, a new bilateral mechanism to ensure regular consultations at the leader’s level. Both leaders agreed to increase cooperation between the Thai and Indonesian armed forces and law enforcement agencies to tackle common security threats and transnational crime, especially drug trafficking and online scams, as well as exploring potential partnership in the defense industry.

Both leaders are committed to increasing bilateral trade between the two countries given the size of their economies and the connectivity. Therefore, both leaders welcomed the plan by Thailand to convene the first Joint Trade Committee meeting within this year to increase bilateral trade, which was 18 billion USD last year. They also pledged strong support for more two-way investment, and expanded cooperation in food security, fisheries, halal products, energy security and green economy, education and healthcare.

Both leaders also agreed to enhance tourism cooperation, especially cruise and yacht tourism, wellness and MICE tourism. They welcomed the upcoming new flights connecting Bangkok with Medan and Surabaya, and between Phuket and Medan soon, which will increase tourism and business.

As founding members of ASEAN and the two largest economies in ASEAN, Thailand and Indonesia are committed to strengthening ASEAN solidarity and centrality, and will work closely to deepen regional economic integration and increase regional strength in the face of global economic uncertainties. They also reaffirmed the leading role of ASEAN in helping to bring peace back to Myanmar.

Both sides witnessed the signing ceremony of the MoU between the Ministry of Public Health of the Kingdom of Thailand and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia on Health Cooperation. The Prime Minister of Thailand also hosted luncheon in honour of the President of Indonesia and the delegation.
