On 7 - 23 July 2025, representatives from the Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs, along with officials from relevant agencies, including the Office of the Attorney-General, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Commerce, and the Ministry of Finance, attended the 58th session of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) held in Vienna, Austria. The UNCITRAL session, convened annually, serves as a forum to harmonise and modernise international trade law through its six working groups. Thailand has consistently played an active role in the UNCITRAL, such as previously serving as the Chair of the last session.
Key milestones achieved by the 58th session of UNCITRAL include: (1) the approval of the Draft Convention on Negotiable Cargo Documents; (2) the adoption of the UNCITRAL Toolkit and Background Notes on Asset Tracing and Recovery in Insolvency Proceedings; and (3) the adoption of the UNCITRAL Toolkit on the Prevention and Mitigation of International Investment Disputes, which aims to foster a stable and predictable investment environment. Thailand actively contributed to the development of this Toolkit, including sharing its practice on the establishment of the Committee on International Investment Protection.
During the deliberation on the work of the UNCITRAL Working Group III, H.E. Mrs. Suphanvasa Chotikajan Tang, Ambassador of Thailand to Denmark, participated in the session as the Head of the Thai delegation and reaffirmed Thailand’s continued leadership in advocating for the establishment of the Advisory Centre on International Investment Dispute Resolution. In addition, she reiterated Thailand’s bid to host the headquarters of the Advisory Centre in Bangkok, which if successful, will enhance Thailand’s status in the international law community, promote legal services and international arbitration as well as attract qualified workforce to the country. At this session, the Commission endorsed the Roadmap for the Operationalization of the Advisory Centre, indicating the workplan and timeline to conclude its operationalization by the next session in 2026.
