On 2 May 2025, H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, received H.E. Mr. Sugiono, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, who paid his first official visit to Thailand at the invitation of Foreign Minister Maris on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Indonesia in 2025.
The two Foreign Ministers held a bilateral discussion and co-chaired the 10th Meeting of Joint Commission (JC) between Thailand and Indonesia at the Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok, with representatives from relevant agencies of both countries in attendance, to review progress and discuss future directions of the Thai - Indonesian bilateral relations.
Both sides reiterated the warm and longstanding ties and discussed preparations for the upcoming official visit to Thailand by the President of the Republic of Indonesia.
Both sides agreed to enhance collaboration in preventing and combating transnational crimes, particularly online scams, trafficking in persons, and drug trafficking. They also addressed traditional and emerging security threats such as terrorism and cybersecurity. Furthermore, they also discussed promoting cooperation in the defence industry.
Both sides stressed the importance of economic cooperation in the face of global uncertainty. In this regard, they agreed to further promote trade and investment, especially in agricultural products, fisheries, and the Halal industry, to ensure food security, energy security, and the advancement of the digital economy. They also agreed to enhance tourism cooperation by increasing flight routes and promoting cruise and yacht tourism. In addition, Thailand requested Indonesia to protect and facilitate Thai investors operating in Indonesia.
Both sides stressed the importance of expanded collaboration in education, public health, and culture, particularly in the creative industries, which will support people-to-people ties, especially among the youth.
The Foreign Ministers of both countries also exchanged views on international issues of mutual interest, including ASEAN’s important role on the issue of Myanmar, strengthening intra-ASEAN economic cooperation to enhance regional resilience amidst global economic uncertainty, and the situation in the Middle East.
