On 25 March 2014, H.E. Mr. Nopporn Adchariyavanich, Thai Ambassador to Sri Lanka, paid respect to Venerable Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangalabida Maha Nayake Thero, Maha Nayake Thero of the Malwatte Chapter of Siam Niakaya at Malwatta Temple and Venerable Udaugama Saddhrma Keerthi Sri Rathanapala Buddharakkithabhidana, Maha Nayake Thero of the Asgiriya Chapter of Siam Nikaya at Asgiriya Temple in Kandy.
On this occasion, Thai Ambassador also gave 260 almbowls, which were made of stainless steel and etched with the emblem of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, to the Malwatta and Asgiriya Maha Nayaka Theros, as the special token in the commemoration of 260th Anniversary of the establishment of Siam Nikaya in Sri Lanka in 2013.
The Maha Nayaka Theros of Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters are the supreme leaders of Sangha (Buddhist monks) of Siam Nikaya in Sri Lanka. The Siam Nikaya was established in Sri Lanka by Venerable Upali Maha Thero from the Kingdom of Ayutthaya in 1753. The Siam Nikaya is now the most influential Theraveda Buddhist section in Sri Lanka and both Maha Nayaka Theros have performed duty in taking care of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy together with the Chief Lay Custodian of the Tooth Relic Temple, the most important temple of Sri Lanka, until the present day.
